Technical Advisor
for Friends-Internation al in Indonesia

Friends-Internation al’s vision is that together, we protect marginalized urban children and youth and with them create innovative and exciting opportunities to build their futures.
Friends-Internation al has been working with marginalized urban children and youth since 1994 when it established the Mith Samlanh project in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. As the project grew to become a best-practice model in the region, Friends-Internation al has developed 5 main interlinked programs:
-The Friends Alliance: Friends-Internation al initiates projects that provide good practice services to marginalized urban children and youth.
-The CYTI Network: Friends-Internation al develops, trains and supports a network of partners (including NGOs and Government)
-The ChildSafe Network: Friends-Internation al manages a global child protection network that involves key people from all tiers of society in actively protecting children from all forms of abuse.
-Good Money Enterprises: Develop social business initiative that will ensure Friends-Internation al’s financial sustainability and reduce donor-dependency.
- Monitoring, Evaluation and Research: Support all Friends-Internation al programs to be responsive and targeted best practice models through regular and effective monitoring, evaluation and action research.
In 2007, Friends-Internation al had contact with over 500,000 children/youth and provided regular services to 11,000 individual children and youth. The same year, Friends-Internation al teams trained over 1,000 professionals and community volunteers around the world to address vulnerable children/youth issues in accordance with the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Friends-Internation al’s ChildSafe Network is attracting large corporate partners in Cambodia and internationally. Many businesses are recognizing the potential advantages of being associated with this network. Organizations such as ANZ Royal, Intrepid Travel and Intercontinental Resorts are some of the new members to join us in protecting children.
In 2007, Friends-Internation al has established a Friends-Alliance program for street children (Teman Baik) and a ChildSafe Network in Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam (NAD). Friends-Internation al is now looking to develop its activities in NAD along with projects in other regions in Indonesia.
Mission of the Technical Advisor for Indonesia
Friends-Internation al is currently looking for a Technical Advisor for Indonesia to support the programs implemented in Banda Aceh and to prepare for the establishment of programs in Medan, Jakarta and Bali.
The role of the Technical Advisor is to:
- Ensure that the activities run by or supported by Friends-Internation al are of best quality for the concerned children and youth, in accordance with the Friends-Internation al Charter.
- Design and prepare the administrative and operational structure for the FI extension in Indonesia.
The Technical Advisor is working under the responsibility of the International Coordinator and in collaboration with FI program coordinators.
Main responsibilities
- Develop the project in Banda Aceh in collaboration with FI program coordinators (CYTI, FA, CN, GME, MER)
- Provide individual support to the current Friends-Internation al project managers in Banda Aceh (Friends-Alliance project Manager and ChildSafe Network project manager) for project management and reporting
- Survey needs in other regions in Indonesia in collaboration with the International Coordinator and FI program coordinators
- Design new strategies and projects for Friends-Internation al in Indonesia in collaboration with the International Coordinator and FI program coordinators
- Prepare the administrative structure of Friends-Internation al in Indonesia (new offices, MoUs..)
- Represent Friends-Internation al with all parties involved with Friends-Internation al in Indonesia (technical partners, Government, UN agencies, donors …)
- Facilitate the implementation and running of a Friends-Internation al Advisory Committee in Indonesia
- Participate in fund raising initiatives (including proposal writing) in collaboration with the Grant Manager
Requirements
- Professional experience in management of development projects (minimum 3 years)
- A four year University degree in public health, social services, communications or other relevant discipline
- Have a strong interest/understand ing of child protection and child rights
- Experience working in Indonesia
- Understanding of accounting and financial systems (including donors systems)
- Great management and negotiations skills
- Dynamic, enthusiastic and with initiative
- Computer literate
- Availability to travel locally and overseas
- Prepared to work in a flexible manner and schedule
- Fluent in Indonesian (Bahasa) and English (strong written and verbal skills)
The position is open to national and international candidates. The position is based in Jakarta and requires great flexibility: frequent stays in Banda Aceh (2-3 weeks in a row) and travels to other provinces in the country.
